Design Development

Following clay preparation, the process of design development brings the concept from idea to form. It’s where imagination meets material—where sketches, measurements, and discussions from the design consultation begin to take shape through hands-on experimentation.

Design development starts with forming tests and prototypes. The potter explores how the prepared clay responds to shaping techniques such as wheel throwing, hand-building, or slip casting, depending on the intended design. This stage allows for adjustments in proportion, thickness, and balance—ensuring that the piece not only reflects the original concept but also functions as intended.

Texture, surface detail, and decorative elements are also refined here. The potter may experiment with carving, adding handles, or applying slip to achieve the desired aesthetic. Each trial provides insight into how the clay behaves, helping to fine-tune details before committing to a final version.

At this point, functionality and ergonomics come under close review—especially for pieces meant for daily use, such as mugs, plates, or vases. The potter tests comfort, weight, and stability, ensuring that beauty and utility coexist harmoniously.

Once the prototype is approved, a consistent method for production is defined. This might include creating templates or molds to replicate forms accurately while maintaining the handmade character of each piece.

In essence, design development is an iterative dance between vision and material truth. It transforms an idea into a tested, balanced, and expressive design—ready for the next stages of drying, firing, and glazing.
